Introduction on IUCD
India was first country in the world to start a National Family Planning Programme in 1956. The Reproductive and Child Health Programme started in 1997 will ensure satisfied clients who in turn come back for additional services. Quality of services will be ensured by promoting informed choice, friendly and cooperative attitude of health workers, caring for privacy and dignity of clients, technical competence of service providers and good quality equipment and drugs, adequate follow up care and encouraging male participation.
The Reproductive & Child Health ( RCH) Programme in India promotes responsible and planned parenthood through the Government’s Family Welfare programme with voluntary use and free choice of contraceptive methods. It is an established fact that use of spacing methods can effectively reduce Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Ratio. Studies indicate that children born less than two years after a previous birth are nearly three times at greater risk of death than children whose mothers waited three years between births (NFHS – 3). Hence promotion of spacing methods would not only contribute towards reduction of MMR & IMR.
Advantages tend to be exaggerated, many myths and misconceptions prevalent in the community and among the providers leading to non-acceptance. Therefore, IUCD training programme will provide the doctors and paramedical staff detailed information on IUCD and both knowledge and skill training are mandatory requirements for quality provision of this service.
